Space Odyssey

“Hey, Siri what's your favorite song?” “My taste in music is rather unconventional. I doubt you’de like it.” Technology seems like a cool resource, but what if that was all we had. No more human contact or connection. Life would be so abstract, boring, and dull. Technology doesn't have feelings or emotions so how would we connect on a deeper level? We can’t. Do not get me wrong, Siri and Alexa know far more than all of us do but are they really BETTER than us? The world needs humans. Do you ever have a conversation with someone and are so invested, you can just sit there for hours without it getting dull? Alexa and Siri can’t hold a conversation for more than fifteen minutes. After a while, it seems like you are just talking to yourself. Asking Alexa to play music and what the weather is isn’t enough for us to interact with forever. We need emotion and feelings, and real ones too. Sure, Siri can say things like “I'm sad” but obviously she isn’t really sad. I told Siri i w

AI and Pinoccio

“I want to be a real boy” is what both Pinoccio and David both had in common. In the book, “The Adventures of Pinocchio” and the movie, “AI Artificial Intelligence” both Pinoccio and David went through a lot and tried their hardest to become human. Pinocio was created as a wooden puppet who could speak, then learned to walk, and later became a real life boy. David was a Robot made with the ability to love. After David found out about Pinoccio becoming a real boy he insisted on finding the same blue fairy that humanized Pinoccio, so she can do the same thing for him. He thought that becoming a real boy would mean  his mother would love him more. They both had human qualities, but still didn’t feel like a real boy. No matter how well they both walked or talked they still begged the blue fairy to become human. David looked just like a boy, and had more feelings than some humans do. Throughout the movie he shows signs of emotion, and it is clear how much he really does love his moth

Ghost In the Shell

Imagine getting charged with a DUI and you argue that it is fine since you were only HALF drunk. Laws are made for a reason, and you can’t break them. If robots have three laws they need to follow, half-human half-robots need to follow these rules as well. They are still part robots, and it is only fair that they follow Isaac Asimov’s laws of robotics. In 1942 Isaac Asimov wrote a short story called “runaround” that discussed the three rules of robotics. The three rules robots are required to follow according to Asimov are that they cannot injure a human being, or allow a human to be in harm. They also must obey rules that a human sets unless it contradicts the first law, and lastly a robot has to protect their fellow robots unless it conflicts with the first or second law. These laws are all specifically made for robots, even those who may have some human qualities within. Half-robot half-humans must follow the three laws of robotics to ensure humans do not become extinct. If robots w

The 5th Element: Fashion Show

Image
The 5th Element Fashion Show:  my group members were Emma and Olivia. I represented the enlightenment of humanity which connects to "the divine light" in the 5th element. It represents hope for the future of humanity, and the positive side of life if we keep our planet healthy, and continue with technological advancements. Emma represented the dangers that can lead to darkness. It connects to the "giant ball of black fire" in the movie. It represents possible dangers in our future if we continue down a path of overconsumption and poor environmental choices. It could also connect to other sci-fi films through the death and chaos advancements through technology brought to humanity, and how sometimes it can affect us negatively as well. Olivia represents the in-between. This relates to the time before "the great evil" returned. It represents "the now" instead. It displays the push and pulls between light and darkness. It further connects to the impo

Interstellar

The movie, "Interstellar" not only teaches us about space and introduces us to time travel, it also shows us how important a father and daughter relationship is. Right after leaving the classroom after watching this movie I immediately called my dad and told him to watch this movie. I didn't think too deeply about why I called him and wanted him to watch it, but after having class discussions about the movie I realized I had a personal connection with it and I believe he, along with everyone else deserves to watch this movie and feel the way I did. I never really cry when I watch movies, but this movie made me bawl. I loved how he became reunited with his daughter at the end, even though he looked younger than she did. The beginning of the movie made us believe that this family was average and ordinary, but we later found out Murph was the one who uncovered space travel.
