Space Odyssey

“Hey, Siri what's your favorite song?” “My taste in music is rather unconventional. I doubt you’de like it.” Technology seems like a cool resource, but what if that was all we had. No more human contact or connection. Life would be so abstract, boring, and dull. Technology doesn't have feelings or emotions so how would we connect on a deeper level? We can’t. Do not get me wrong, Siri and Alexa know far more than all of us do but are they really BETTER than us? The world needs humans. Do you ever have a conversation with someone and are so invested, you can just sit there for hours without it getting dull? Alexa and Siri can’t hold a conversation for more than fifteen minutes. After a while, it seems like you are just talking to yourself. Asking Alexa to play music and what the weather is isn’t enough for us to interact with forever. We need emotion and feelings, and real ones too. Sure, Siri can say things like “I'm sad” but obviously she isn’t really sad. I told Siri i was sad and she told me to talk to a friend or family member. She is unable to help with emotions, or help make someone feel better. Technology cant has feelings, they are both incapable of love and affection. These are two major aspects of a human life. They might seem like they are just like us, but if they can’t even eat and sleep what’s so common? Eating and sleeping are both necessities in our life, they give us energy and allow us to be awake and alert. Robots don’t need an energy source, they run off batteries and code. When talking to people it is also important to see them visually in order to really understand them. Talking to a phone or a speaker doesn't allow us to fully interact with them. We don't know how Alexa and Siri look, if they have hair, what color their eyes are, or even what their gender is. They have no character. Some humans also use different voice tones and dynamics when speaking, such as whispering and yelling. Both Siri and Alexa speak at the volume we as humans set them to. This might not seem all that important, but it is. Siri and Alexa are also monitored through voice, so they can’t see us either. They don't know how to address us, or anything of that sort. They also are unable to express what they are saying by using hand gestures or facial expressions. Facial expressions and gestures are so important to help get a point across or get a look inside someone's head and truly know what they are thinking. Without being able to see them, we have no idea what is going on in their heads, or if anything is going on at all. Alexa and Siri are robots, who are set and created to answer what people ask. They are programmed to say certain things and aren’t allowed to say others. When I asked Siri to curse she told me she was unable to do so. If she is asked something they don't know the answer to, she also just searches the web. Us humans can search the web ourselves if we wanted to, why do we even need them at that point. They don't have their own mind or own opinions. If you go shopping with your friends and want to buy something you ask them for help, you cannot ask Siri or Alexa for any advice or for a second opinion. They are smart and turn on when they think they are getting addressed, but Alexa turning on at times I don’t want her to, happen way too often. She goes on a whole rampage whenever someone says her name. Siri and Alexa seem intelligent and all, but we humans need more.
